Amazing West Coast National Park attractions

One of the major West Coast National Park attractions are the stunning displays of wild flowers each year between July and October, turning the land into the most beautiful yellow, pink, purple orange and blue colours.

A great opportunity for photographers to take wonderful pictures, especially with the luscious turquoise waters of the Lagoon fading to white at the shoreline as a backdrop.

A fantastic setting to view the wildlife such as Eland, gemsbok, bontebok, springbok, wildebeest, kudu and Cape mountain zebra.

The Park is also a birdwatcher's paradise with up to 250 different bird species, resident as well as migratory. The Lagoon is a centre of attraction for a numerous species of wading birds flocking to it in their tens of thousands during their breeding season. There are three bird hides in the Park at Seeberg, Geelbek, and Abrahamskraal, where you can observe and study the birdlife in peace and at close quarters. The park also offers many cycling, walking, hiking and mountain bike trails.

One amazing attraction of the Park you should not miss out on, are the so called "Footprints of Eve". These are a number of fossilized footprints discovered in 1995 on a piece of rock at the shoreline of Langebaan Lagoon in the West Coast National Park in South Africa. According to studies by Paleoanthropologists they can be dated back approximately 117.000 year, most probably left by a female human. This would make them the most ancient identified footprints of an anatomically-modern human.

There are fantastic viewpoints to be found throughout the park, offering you spectacular views of the landscape turned into a blanket of flowers, the coastline and the ocean and of course the Lagoon. On the seaside there are observation spots to view Southern Right Whales coming to the Lagoon each year to calve. You have a good chance to see these massive animals frolicking just beyond the surf in the waters off the Tsaarsbank seashore.

  • Mountains in the South and the Cedarberg in the North-east.
  • Atlantic viewpoint which overlooks the beaches and the Atlantic Ocean.

Another attraction in the Park that is a definite "must" is the widely acclaimed Geelbek restaurant. Situated at the Lagoon, the restaurant can be found in an old historical Cape Dutch style house built in 1744 and proclaimed as a national Monument. Next to an outstanding reputation for great food and wine with some of the recipes more than 300 years old, Culture and nature lovers will adore its beautiful setting in which they can enjoy their meals.
