scenic highlights of the Cape Peninsula
Cape Town sightseeing by car or bus is a great
way to enjoy the incredibly beautiful drives around Cape Town and itssurroundings, each one more
scenic than the other.
It is a pity though that so many overseas visitors are uneasy about driving in South Africa,
especially from those countries where they drive on the right hand side of the road.
Besides hiring a car and making your own way and exploring at your own leisure, there are
of course other ways and means to get around the Cape Peninsula, such as a large variety of
day-tours and the very popular Cape Town hop-on hop-off open-top sight-seeing bus.
If your stay is very short and you have for only one opportunity for a drive to take in some of
the many sights and views, then it might be good idea to devote the time you have, if possible a
whole day, to the circular Peninsula route.

That way you at least get to see the major "must have seen" attractions like Signal Hill,
Camps Bay, Hout Bay, Chapman's Peak drive, Noordhoek, Cape of Good Hope nature reserve, Cape of
Good Hope and Cape Point on the western side of the Peninsula.
On the way back to Cape Town taking the eastern side of the Cape Peninsula, you will see
Buffels Bay, Simon's Town, Fishhoek Bay, Boyes Drive and Muizenberg. Of course you can adjust the
itinerary anyway you want to, depending on your preferences.

The following are only but a few examples of the top scenic drives in and around cape Town:
Signal Hill
Flanking the Table Mountain at its western side, Signal Hill was used to communicate weather
warnings, anchoring instructions and the precise 1.00 PM Cape mean time to the ships in the
harbour. Still firing what is known as its noon gun every day at 1 o'clock, Signal Hill is
probably the best drive to view Robben Island, the V&A Waterfront, central Cape Town and
Table Mountain.
The narrow winding road taking you up the hill provides different vantage points from which
you can view the imposing facades of Table mountain and Devil's peak and enjoy the night lights
of Cape Town.

Cape Town to Hout Bay
Starting at the V&A waterfront, Beach road will take you past the new Cape Town Stadium,
Green Point, Sea Point, Mouille Point, Anchor Bay and Clifton to Camps Bay, offering awesome
coastal scenery and stunning sea views. From Camps Bay the route continues past Llandudno to Hout
Bay.
Perfect place for a stop is Fisherman's Warf restaurant at Hout bay, a fantastic and very
popular seafood restaurant, offering wonderful views of the picturesque fishing harbour and
pearly white beach while enjoying the delicious food. Walk up the long pier and delight in the
fishing vessels, catamarans and yachts, the harbour and its activity and the beach and mountain
scenery.

Chapman's Peak Drive
Continuing from Hout Bay on your way to Cape Point your first encounter is one of the most
awe-inspiring scenic drives in South Africa and in fact world-wide. Linking the towns of Hout Bay
and Noordhoek Chapman's Peak drive offers without doubt some of the most spectacular views of the
whole of the Cape Peninsula.

Driving south towards Noordhoek and Cape Point the left side of the road is Chapman's Peak and
on the other side there is an almost vertical rocky drop to the Atlantic Ocean, so steep and deep,
it takes your breath away. The 9 km of road with its 114 curves is literally carved out of the
side of Chapman's Peak, winding its way along the coast in a most spectacular way.
