The City of Cape Town South Africa, Tours and Travel
Guides
Cape Town South Africa, voted as number five of
the top 50 tourist destinations world-wide, really deserves to feature on your "see before you
die..." list.
Cape of Good Hope, Cape of Storms, Fairest Cape, Mother City or just The Cape are some of the
names that are used to refer to Cape Town and the Cape Peninsula.
It gives you an idea of the many facets that make this city and its surrounds a tourist's
paradise.
Situated in the south-west corner of the Western Cape province in South Africa, it is the most
southern city of the African continent.
The heart of Cape Town can be found right in the north of the Cape Peninsula. Featuring a flat
top of more than 1,000 m (3,300 ft) high and flanked by its two sentinels Lion's Head and Devil's
Peak, Table Mountain makes a stunning background for the City Bowl. Often a thin layer cloud cover
settles itself on top of the mountain, looking like a table cloth on the flat top of Table
Mountain.
The N2, also known as the Nelson Mandela Boulevard (prev. Eastern Boulevard), as it enters the City Bowl and ends in the Central Business District. City of Cape Town South Africa, Tours and Travel Guides
Cape Town is considered to be the financial and commercial heart of the Western Cape Province,
South Africa's second-most important economic nerve centre and the number three of the top
metropolitan economies on the African continent. Its metropolitan area is very large, covering
Atlantis in the north, Cape Point in the south and Durbanville and Somerset West in the east.
After Johannesburg, the City of Cape Town metropolitan municipality has the second largest
population in South Africa, estimated at 3,5 million people. Its land area measures 2,455 square
kilometres (948 square mile), resulting in a comparatively low population density of 1,425
residents per square kilometre (3,690 per square mile).
The actual city itself is situated in a comparatively small area between Table bay and Table
Mountain. Next to its position as capital of the Western Cape province, it is also the country's
Parliament and legislative capital. Together with its popularity as a tourist destination, Cape
Town is also widely renowned for its unique Cape Floral Kingdom and its harbour.
As South Africa's oldest city, Cape Town is affectionately known as the Mother city to South
Africans. What makes this City so special, is the fact that it is situated amid one of the world's
most beautiful settings and in one of the world's most beautiful countries. Together with its warm
summer and temperate winter climate, friendly population, multicultural exotic vibe, and an
incredible spirit, it is a dream holiday destination.
Its multi-ethnic culture, a fusion of cultures of the Dutch, English, Indonesian, French,
German settlers, Bushman, Hottentots and Bantu over a period of 350 years, is unique and really
something you have to experience. It clearly reflects in the many cultural facets of the City.
Such as history, language, architecture, cuisine, music and dance, to name but a few.
With a National Park as well as two World Heritage Sites within its metropolitan boundaries,
Cape Town and the surrounding Peninsula features one of the widest varieties of tourist
attractions throughout the world. These include breathtaking scenery, fantastic beaches,
beautiful forests, magnificent mountains next to world-class shopping malls, stunning museums,
great art galleries, hotels, restaurants and a large variety of entertainment.
You will find large variations in standards of living and lots of wonderful examples of
communal pride and positive outlook to balance against the relatively high criminal activity level
and HIV/AIDS statistics. But then there's also Ubuntu, true African hospitality and care for
fellow human beings.
When you are walking the streets of Cape Town, you can see men and women of different skin
colours and cultures working alongside one another to help make Cape Town a better place for all
its citizens. You are going to fall in love with a city of high hopes, inspiring freedom and
incredible character.
