Check out the Johannesburg weather forecasts and conditions

What would the Johannesburg weather be like? Checking out the weather and climate is one of the first things people think of when planning a visit to another country or even city.

However there is no need to dive into tons of information and weather charts to find out about the weather in Johannesburg.

Rest assured, you will not be disappointed. Like in virtually the whole of South Africa, the weather in Johannesburg is just fabulous.

If you were asked to describe the perfect weather conditions for a great vacation, it would most likely turn out to be very close to what Johannesburg has to offer, dry and sunny all year round.

The very basic ingredients are a high altitude combined with a subtropical latitude and a semi-arid climate.

Located in the center of the country on the South African interior high-plateau locally called the Highveld, it is the altitude of about 1,753 meters above sea level that keeps the otherwise high temperatures within reasonable levels. The annual average number of sunshine hours averages around eight to ten hours per day.

Summer

The summer period is from October to April, which is also the rainfall period. Johannesburg's summer weather can be characterized by pleasantly warm days, comfortably cool evenings with often a brief and sometimes quite heavy thunderstorm in the late afternoon. Leaving a wonderful earthy, balmy and distinctively African smell in the air after they have passed. These storms can be quite a dramatic experience.

In Johannesburg it is never humid and never uncomfortably hot either. You will enjoy pleasantly warm temperatures with an average daytime maximum of 28° C (82° F). Evenings are nice and balmy with an average nighttime minimum of 16° C (61° F).

Autumn

The in between seasons Autumn and Spring are short and brief, compared to those in the northern hemisphere. The Autumn period basically consists of the months April and May, offering excellent weather. There is very little rain and it is somewhat less warm but still very nice, getting colder as the season progresses.

Winter

The winter period is from May to July with dry and sunny days and not a drop of rain or even a cloud in the sky. Daytime temperatures are enjoyable, averaging around 20° C with peaks up to 25° C. The nights are chilly and often outright cold with temperatures averaging around 5° C with peaks below 0° C. Especially the early mornings can be cold with frost. You should be prepared to dress for mild days and cool evenings.

The lowest nighttime temperature ever recorded in Johannesburg is - 8.2° C (17.2° F), on the 13th of June 1979, while the lowest recorded maximum daytime temperature is 1.5° C (34.7° F), on the 19th of June 1964.

Spring

The spring period are the months August, September and the first half of October. The air will continue to be very dry, while temperatures will start rising back again to the summer levels. The nights are still on the cool side for a while. There will be little or no rainfall until October.

These are the months when strong winds are blowing over the Highveld. It is then when the weather in Johannesburg can get nasty with these winds blowing over the loose sand of the goldmine dumps, covering the city in a yellow haze of fine sand and dust.

This all changes quite sudden and abrupt with the arrival of the first rains in October. In a matter of weeks everything starts greening and blooming.

Rainfall

Most of the rainfall in Johannesburg occurs during the summer months, the annual average rainfall being 713 millimeters (28.1 inches). There is of course the exception in the form of the odd shower in the winter period, but they are few.

The summer rainfall ranges from light rain and showers over a longish period of a few days to heavy afternoon thunderstorms with a large downpour in a matter of a few hours. Luckily they disappear almost as soon as they arrive, with glorious sunshine from a blue sky following soon afterwards.
