It is believed that Marthinus Wessel Pretorius, first State President of the South African Republic, built the old Cape-style dwelling that now constitutes the President Pretorius Museum, with its coach-house, stable and smithy. The homestead (built in 1868), with its tranquil farmyard, recalls an urban Boer culture which has long since disappeared.
