Most country-wide guided tour itineraries include the circuit from Cape Town to the Garden Route (with its forests and beaches ),to kwaZulu-Natal ( wildlife, Zulu culture and Drakensberg mountains), through Mpumalanga ( Kruger National Park and Panorama Route) and ending up in Johannesburg.

The important thing is that these tours cover most of the must-see tourist regions and attractions. Some of them also include neighbouring countries like Swaziland, Namibia, Botswana and Mozambique. They usually last about three weeks, but can be longer or shorter.

You can have your tour the other way around if you want to, starting in Johannesburg and ending up in Cape Town. Options range from quite basic where you sleep in a tent which you put up yourself, to rather luxurious. The prices of course will differ accordingly.

Backpacker tours in South Africa,...

For freedom-loving and independent travellers, backpacking is a fantastic way of touring South Africa. You have absolute freedom to choose on a daily basis, where you want to go and how long you want to stay. Backpackers usually do not stay long at one place. They want to move on and see and experience as much as possible.

Staying in backpacker hostels and using public transport facilities, enables you to keep expenses within affordable limits. South Africa has become a favourite destination for backpackers from all over the world, offering an amazing variety of inexpensive accommodation.

Backpacker hostels and lodges are clean, well run and generally fun. Many of them offer single and double rooms, as well as the traditional dormitories with shared bathrooms.

There are more then 180 backpacker hostels and lodges spread across our country. The best way to travel between them is on a special bus, generally known in South Africa as the Bazz Bus. It provides a hop-on hop-off, door to door service between hostels.

All you need is one ticket to your final destination, allowing you to get on and off the bus as often as you like along the route, meeting new people all the time.

Alternatively, there is a comprehensive network of long distance bus and train routes. These are comfortable, reasonably priced, clean and safe. Do shop around however, for the best possible deal. If you are travelling in a group of between two and four, it may be worthwhile to split costs on a car rental.

In the major cities and towns you can use the local public transport system, or grab one of the many mini-bus taxis. As in the other parts of the world, hitchhiking in South Africa carries unacceptable risks and should rather not be considered.
