Located approximately 7km south of Mopani rest camp, Tsendze is the latest overnight facility addition to the Kruger National Park, offering caravan and camping sites only. The sites are laid out in two circles, under and around beautiful Leadwood, Mopane and Apple Leaf trees, providing a rustic, close to nature wildlife experience. The camp has no reception and visitors are required to report to Mopani camp for checking in. baboon portrait Photograph by Arno Meintjes The area in which the camp is situated, is known as the "Mooiplaas Ranger Section". Two prominent seasonal water courses, the Tsendze river and the Nshawu creek, which is actually more like a shallow marshy drainage channel, run through this area. The area has been and still is, home to large tuskers and some of the better known ones, now unfortunately dead and gone, were "Nshawu", "Shilowa" and "Mabarule". A current tusker with rather impressive ivory is "Alexander" who is often seen in the area. <<< Top of Page Map,... Buffalos seeking relief from the heat copyright © South Africa tours and travel.com The only facilities present are 30 camping sites, each with its own "braai" (barbecue) and rubbish bin, two communal kitchens, two ablution blocks, warm water from gas geysers, and one fresh water tap per three camping sites. There is no electricity and portable generators are not allowed. The camp site offers a fantastic close to nature wildlife camping experience. The information desk at the reception of the Mopani rest camp can give you detailed information about all the facilities available, which include the following;
Accommodation,... Ground Hornbill - Tsendze Camping site, Kruger National Park, South Africa Photograph by Arno Meintjes Accommodation consists of 30 tent or caravan sites without power point, surrounded by a variety of trees that provide shade. A maximum of 6 persons are allowed per site. The camp has excellent communal ablutions and cooking facilities. Upon booking, guests may reserve specific sites (subject to availability). Tsendze camping site is managed form Mopani rest camp and has no reception desk. Guests are required to report to Mopani camp for check-in before entering the Tsendze camp. <<< Top of Page Activities,... Game drive and Giraffe encounter copyright © South African tourism The guests at the camp have access to all the activities at Mopani rest camp. With its abundance of large trees in the camp, The camp offers great birding opportunities right around you're the camping site. Guests can also look out for "Alexander", a big tusker Elephant bull with rather impressive ivory, who is often encountered in the area and along the main tarred route between Tsendze and Mopani rest Camp. Guided bush walk copyright © South African tourism Kruger National Park lies in a summer rainfall area with occasional bursts of quick summer storms (which can be quite heavy) occurring later in the day, cooling the air and settling the dust. The summer months (October to April) are hot and often quite humid. Winters are warm and mild with cool evenings. Visitors going on night drives during the winter period may require warm clothing. <<< Top of Page How to get there,... There are daily scheduled flights between Gateway and OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg. The camp site is approximately 75km away from Phalaborwa gate. With a speed limit of 50 km/hr on the main roads in the Park, you should allow about 2 hours for the drive to the camp. however if you want to enjoy the game viewing possibilities give yourself more time. Landscape in the Kruger National Park - Tsendze Camping site, Kruger National Park, South Africa copyright © South Africa tours and travel.com By road via Phalaborwa gate Travelling from Johannesburg or Pretoria, take the N1 toll-road to Polokwane (Pietersburg). 40km before Polokwane turn right onto the R71 and head for Tzaneen. After Tzaneen continue with the R71 towards Phalaborwa and the gate. Allow between 6 to 7 hours for the trip to the gate. the camping site is approximately 75km away from Phalaborwa gate, so allow about a further 2 hours for the drive to the camp.
